You have to invest to get a return. I view the time my organization spends on participating in benchmark surveys as the investment.

Weather Channel’s Lisa Chang Talks Benchmarking

A benchmark is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as something that serves as a standard by which others may be measured or judged. When it comes to making critical business decisions, HR benchmarking is increasing in importance.

We had an opportunity to ask Lisa Chang, EVP of Human Resources for the Weather Channel Companies, about how she uses benchmarks as a part of her HR toolkit.

Q: How often do you use/reference benchmarks in your job?

Three Cable Companies Recognized for Diversity

DiversityInc. recently published its Top 50 Companies for Diversity®, and three companies from CTHRA’s membership were included: Turner Broadcasting was ranked #21, Cox Communications earned the #25 spot, and Comcast was included as #49. We applaud their success!

The rankings are determined by responses to a 230-question survey which measures CEO commitment, human capital, corporate communications and supplier diversity. CEO commitment is the most heavily weighted criteria. Only companies with 1,000 or more employees qualify for consideration. Bank of America earned the number one ranking. The complete listing can be seen at http://diversityinc.com/public/1595.cfm.

Again, Congratulations to Turner Broadcasting, Cox Communications and Comcast for their achievements in diversity!

CTHRA’s 2007 Benchmarking Initiatives

CTHRA will spearhead four industry-specific benchmarking initiatives in 2007: our annual assessment of compensation among cable and satellite multiple systems operators (MSOs), the annual programmers’ compensation report, CTHRA’s second annual study of human capital metrics, and an evaluation of employee benefits.

Data for each project will be compiled via confidential surveys administered by three research firms. The Croner Company will manage the compensation surveys and reports. Saratoga, a PricewaterhouseCoopers Human Resources offering, will conduct the human capital metrics survey and assessment, and Standard & Associates will oversee CTHRA’s 2007 employee benefits effort.

“ As executives increasingly emphasize human capital’s role in achieving business objectives, we have seen a demand for industry-specific benchmarks. CTHRA is pleased to respond to this need by expanding our benchmarking efforts in 2007,” stated Juan L. Munoz, president of CTHRA and regional vice president of human resources for Time Warner Cable’s Texas region.
