CTHRA's Spotlight On
Helping You Survive the Storm
Mergers. Downsizing. Cutbacks. Status quo no longer seems to exist in the world of cable and telecommunications' HR professionals. Every day seems to present new challenges, and your plate is piled high with urgent and sensitive priorities. We get it, and CTHRA is here to lend a helping hand.
We're focusing our program development on the critical issues you are facing, from the changing legislative landscape to layoffs. And we're committed to delivering the knowledge you need in multiple formats so you can customize your personal CTHRA experience in 2009. We're introducing webinars, expanding our interactive regional roundtable discussions, reformatting our annual Symposium, and augmenting CTHRA's Online Resource Center with topics related to the recession (like this month's feature about boosting employee morale). In addition, we're adding Flash Merit Surveys to CTHRA's 2009 Compensation Survey to gauge fluctuations caused by the ever-changing economic situation.
We know your department's budget is often a concern, so we're keeping our flat rate membership fee structure which provides each and every HR staff member within your company with full access to our member benefits. And we're lowering our 2009 Symposium registration fee to maximize the number of you who can join us on June 9 in Silver Spring, Maryland to tackle the toughest topics you're currently facing with practical, ready-to-rollout solutions.
During times like these, HR's visibility dramatically increases, and CTHRA is committed to helping you and your companies rise to each unexpected occasion. Our sleeves are rolled up, so put us to work!
Strategy Showcase
Your Company's Success Story Could Be Here
Traditionally, this column features a strategic initiative that resulted in hard-hitting, quantifiable business results. We're changing things up this month by using the space to encourage you to submit your success story to CTHRA's HR Best Practices Award selection committee, or to nominate a deserving HR professional for CTHRA's Leadership Excellence Award.
Eligibility requirements and awards' criteria are detailed at http://www.cthra.com/awards.php and we're accepting nominations through March 16, 2009.
“In tough economic times, the strategic contributions of human resources professionals often become more visible throughout an organization. We encourage each of our members to reflect on the challenges that have been overcome during the course of the last year and nominate a deserving HR individual or initiative,” said Lynne Ramsey, CTHRA's president.
Former honorees include The Weather Channel Companies; Cox Orange County and Palos Verdes; Mae Douglas, senior vice president and chief people officer for Cox Communications; and Brian Koenig, retired senior vice president of human resources for Scientific Atlanta, a Cisco Company.
The 2009 award recipients will be honored during CTHRA's HR Symposium on June 9 in Silver Spring, Maryland. In addition, we'll highlight the winning best practices in this column, on our Web site and in the June 8 issue of Multichannel News.

CTHRA Survey Will Gauge Economy's Impact on Pay Practices
Interested in learning how the economy has impacted compensation within our industry? If so, your company should participate in our Annual Compensation Survey which establishes industry benchmarks, provides historical analysis, and identifies trends which you can use to assess and adjust your company's pay practices.
Companies that have not participated in the past will be among good company: all of the top cable programmers and the majority of the top 25 largest multiple system operators (MSOs) participate in CTHRA's Compensation Survey. Last year's survey encompassed data for 143,000 incumbents.
“Seeing how your company compares to other industry employers can prove to be quite enlightening. Employers are able to detect specific regions of the country where they are and aren't competitive, and identify if they overpaying a certain job function. In many instances, the survey pays for itself if a company learns it is overpaying a single job position,” shared Hali Croner, president and CEO of The Croner Company which has conducted CTHRA's Annual Compensation Survey since 2002.
