Strategy Showcase: Attracting, Retaining and Developing Gen Y
Featuring Nadira Hira, FORTUNE
This month's Q&A article features the insight of Nadira Hira, a writer at FORTUNE who focuses on stories about Generation Y, the fastest growing segment of the American workforce. Nadira's work is a collective portrait of this generation that, while not intended to represent every Yer, is based on her research for FORTUNE and her experiences speaking about Gen Y around the country.

Q. What formative factors influenced Gen Y (ie. where are they coming from)?
Nadira: From my perspective, there are three main formative factors for Gen Y. The first is the one we’ve all heard about: their helicoptering parents. Yers are the children of Boomers, who—as many Boomer moms and dads will tell you—are the most attentive, supportive, and even indulgent parents in history. These kids have been teamed and coached from babyhood, they were encouraged to have opinions and taught that those mattered, and as they’ve gotten older—facing lots of student loan debt, a difficult job market, and the follow-your-passion mentality instilled by their parents—those same parents have often pitched in to help with everything from finances to errands, if you can believe it. That safety net allows Yers to stretch out their adolescence, as researchers have said—marrying later, holding off on kids and homes—and without these grown-up obligations, they’re much harder for companies to retain.
