Pulse Check on Merit Increases

Despite frigid conditions across the country, CTHRA is pleased to report that most employees in the cable and satellite industry have avoided frost bite. No, we aren’t talking about the weather—we’re referring to trends in employee compensation! In November 2009, The Croner Company conducted a year-end assessment of merit increases for CTHRA.

While 30 percent of employers in the United States froze salaries in 2009 and 14 percent projected salary freezes this year*, none of the nine cable and satellite MSOs surveyed implemented salary freezes in 2009 or planned them for 2010. Of the 19 programmers and broadcast networks surveyed, only 11 percent reported frozen merit increase budgets for 2009 (down from 18 percent reported in CTHRA’s July 2009 Survey) and 14 percent projected salary freezes in 2010.

CTHRA’s survey found that those planning merit increases in 2010 budgeted a 3.0 percent increase, which is better than the cross-industry projection of 2.7 percent*.

“There is no denying that salary freezes are sometimes inevitable. However, while many industries say that retaining talent is a high priority, results from CTHRA’s latest compensation survey show that the cable and satellite community walks the walk even during a recession,” said Pam Williams, CAE, CTHRA’s executive director.

CTHRA 2010

By Lisa Chang, CTHRA’s President

Foundations by Jason England :: ReleasedLisa Chang, SVP of HR of Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. became the president of CTHRA on January 1. She is a long-term CTHRA board member and founder of CTHRA’s Human Capital Benchmark Survey Committee. She also serves on the national board of Women in Cable Telecommunications (WICT) and is a past board member of The Emma Bowen Foundation, Leadership Education for Asian Pacifics (LEAP) and the Asian and Asian Pacific Alumni Network of the University of Virginia.  Chang is a Betsy Magness Leadership Fellow and the recipient of the National Association of Multi-ethnicity in Cable’s (NAMIC) Luminary Award and WICT Atlanta’s Woman to Watch Award.

I was recently asked to describe the upcoming year for CTHRA, and the word dynamic immediately popped into my head. Merriam-Webster defines it as “a: marked by usually continuous and productive activity or change b: energetic.” There’s no doubt that CTHRA epitomizes this definition!

In January, three talented executives joined our board of directors, Tomas Mathews, EVP of HR for Time Warner Cable, Christopher Powell, EVP of HR for Scripps Networks and Gerard Zack, Director of HR for Cisco Systems. This trio has already brought fresh ideas and an abundance of energy to our dedicated group of veteran board members. During the board’s first face-to-face gathering of the year in February, this powerful group of innovative thinkers embarked on an intense strategic planning process to chart the course for CTHRA in 2010 and beyond.

The Board refined CTHRA’s mission to“providing an industry-specific forum and resources for HR professionals to drive organizational success”.

In our quest to achieve this mission, we have established three key strategies that we will focus on:

  1. Assure that CTHRA’s offer is targeted, relevant and uniquely valuable to our members and the industry.

  2. Create a more fully engaged CTHRA membership community.

  3. Establish CTHRA as highly valuable to our industry’s HR and business leaders.

Of course, we are already busy at work planning several initiatives for 2010! At the top of the list is CTHRA’s Annual HR Symposium. This year’s event will take place on Tuesday, June 8 in Atlanta. Please block out that day so you can gather with colleagues from across the U.S. to gain practical insight from experts and industry practitioners. I sincerely hope to see you there!

Another new venture that we initiated in 2009 was the introduction of a CTHRA forum on Linked In and Facebook. We’ll continue our efforts to explore and leverage the high tech phenomenon of social media to help you connect with CTHRA colleagues in a meaningful manner at any time or location and further building the CTHRA membership community. You can tap into the industry’s brain trust of HR talent simply by posting a question or comment.

In addition, we’ll continue to publish six issues of this newsletter. Each month you’ll find a Strategy Showcase focused on a real-world, industry success story, describing CTHRA members' new programs and resources. If you missed any of the issues in 2009, visit the archives to check out the interview with WOW!’s CEO and VP of HR, the article about Time Warner’s outboarding effort to integrate 11,000 employees from acquired systems, reorganization tips from Discovery, and much more! And if you have a winning strategy, we’d love to hear about it. We’re always looking for initiatives to spotlight.

I’m extremely excited about what lies ahead for CTHRA. Shortly you’ll receive a member survey; I encourage you to take the time to send us your feedback and suggestions. This will ensure that we are delivering the best for you, our members.
